Registering with a Gynecologist

Updated: Jan 3, 2022

Before planning to have a baby it is highly recommended to consult a Gynecologist. However, consulting a specialist doctor in Germany is not as easy as in India. Therefore, it is very important to register with a Gynecologist as soon as you move to Germany or move within Germany to a new place.

As a common practice Gynecologist take patients based on the area of patient’s residence. Therefore, based on the density of population in your area of residence it can be easy or difficult to find a Gynae. However, general feedback is that in bigger cities it is becoming difficult to register with Gynecologist with good reviews because they are generally full and do not take new patients. Hence, when you move to a new location it is recommended to register with the nearest Gynae because if you do not register and plan a baby, you might end up having to invest a lot of energy just to find a Gynae.

How do I choose a gynecologist?

You can use websites such as www.jameda.de , www.doctolib.de or just use google search tool. In websites you can short list based on language, visiting hours etc. It is recommended to check reviews as well.

How often should I visit the gynecologist?

In Germany it is a common practice to set up an appointment for general checkup with Gynecologist at least once a year. During pregnancy obviously, the frequency is higher and will be communicated to you by your doctor.

What is the main difference between gynecologist in India and Germany?

In India it is very common that the doctor who monitored you during your pregnancy and the doctor who assists you in delivery is the same person. However, in Germany the doctor who monitored you during your pregnancy will not assist you during your delivery. He/ She will just give a Überweisung (Transfer Letter) giving permission to hospitals to handle your delivery process.
