Cost of Living for Students

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

As a student you would have to deal with your finances and the domestic expenses on your own, once you are in Germany. Here are some of the expenses that you will incur during your studies. Again, as mentioned in other topics as well, the student expenses may vary drastically from one city to another city/ town in Germany.

These are the expenses that could be incurred for a student living in Berlin. You may consider 15 to 25% for other towns/cities accordingly.

In this article, the expenses are divided into 3 main categories.

Accommodation

Rent is one of the biggest components of your monthly expense and can vary dramatically depending on which option you have chosen.

  • Single room in studentenwohnheim (student apartments) or in a shared apartment rent ranges from min. 200 EUR to 350 EUR. (Typically with shared bath and kitchen)

  • A studio/ single room apartment rent ranges from min. 400 EUR (speculative) to 600 EUR.

Food and domestic expense

Cooking is not an option, but will become an obligation. Depending on the lifestyle you choose, you can either be in the Low, Mean or High region.

  • Low: 250 EUR

Considering you have your breakfast at home, lunch at Mensa (for students, you get at discounted price) and dinner 5 times a week cooked at home.

  • Mean: 300 EUR

A bit of flexibility in having more outside food

  • High: 400 EUR

You hardly cook 1 or 2 meals a week

Drinking, partying and clubbing

Depending on how extravagant your social life is, there can be a vast difference in this expense.

  • Low: 30–40 EUR

You drink by buying beer from the supermarket + you go clubbing once a month

  • Mean: 60–70 EUR

You buy more beer from the supermarket + you go clubbing twice a month

  • High: max. 100 EUR

You go clubbing every weekend + buy hard liquor + beer

Total expense per month

  • Minimum monthly expense, I would say is approx. ~500 EUR

  • Maximum would be ~900 EUR

  • Realistic possibility would be ~650-700 EUR

In addition to this, you would have your nominal semester fees (which covers your local transportation cost as well) and the statutory health insurance.

And any travels across Germany/ Europe is an additional expense, depending on how much and where you plan to travel.
