Driving License

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

  1. Visit the Führerscheinstelle of your respective city with your Indian license and Aufenthaltstitel. Based on this, they will provide you an application form with the appropriate boxes ticked. Based on the city - you may need to get your Indian driving license translated to German Language. My license was in English and was not required.

  2. Attend a first aid training and eye test

  3. Choose a driving school – you can do this based on recommendations from others / flexibility etc. Some driving schools were not ready to start practical’s without completing theory so I did not choose them. Sometimes the cheapest option is not the best. Once you register at the driving school they will put their stamp on the application.

  4. Take the application, First aid course completion document to the respective Rathaus. Please note you need to go to Rathaus where you are registered not the Führerscheinstelle.

  5. You can now start playing with the app for theory and doing practicals as well.

  6. The driving school gets a notification from TÜV or DEKRA that the file is received and you are allowed to take the theory and practicals. In my case this took 8 weeks from submission of the application.

  7. You receive an invoice from TÜV to pay for the driving test. Pay this.

  8. Take the theory exam. You can get a maximum of 10 points wrong else you fail

  9. Keep taking practical classes until your teacher says you are ready to take the exam

  10. Your teacher will book the practical date and time for you. In my case due to holidays and stuff the date was after 3 weeks. Keep taking classes until your exam so that you are well practiced. In case you are ready and the date is 2-3 weeks away, take 1 class per week and then 2 in the week before the exam.

  11. Attend the practical exam – Reach early, be confident and cool, do what you learnt in the classes. Do not do anything else. Move your head. Viel schauen, Schulterblick. If you clear, the examiner immediately gives you a letter

  12. Take this letter to the Führerscheinstelle, submit your Indian license and get the German one. They charge you a nominal fee for this
